Commissioned by William Wrigley Jr., Catalina Casino opened in 1929, marking the 10-year anniversary of Wrigley's 1919 purchase of Catalina Island. Nearly a century later, this historic icon stands as a reminder of the days when millions made the 26-mile trip across the sea to enjoy a movie, dinner, and dancing during the Casino’s heyday as the hub of Avalon nightlife.

Catalina Casino offers two narrated walking tours—Discover the Casino and Behind the Scenes Casino. Each gives you a unique perspective of this Art Deco masterpiece, from the first theatre built specifically for “talkies” on the lower level, to the world’s largest circular ballroom on the top level, where thousands once danced the night away to the sounds of big band music.

The Casino's magnificent ballroom, which has been fully restored, continues to host major events, including the annual New Year’s Eve Celebration, Catalina Conservancy Ball and Catalina Island JazzTrax Festival.

The ballroom is available year-round for weddings, private celebrations, and corporate events. More information on how to rent the Casino and other Catalina Island venues is available on our Meetings and Events page.

Movie theaterEdit

The theater is sound insulated so that patrons do not hear the band or up to 3,000 dancers in the ballroom above. The circular domed ceiling has notable acoustics and has been studied by acoustical designers, due to its repute. A speaker on the theater stage can speak in a normal voice without a microphone and be heard clearly by all in attendance.

The theater's interior walls retain the original Art Deco murals by John Gabriel Beckman. The theater's facade had a painted mural of an Art Deco-style underwater world scene, which was later replaced with replications of Beckman's design created in Catalina Pottery-style tiles. The lobby has walnut wood paneling.

The iconic Catalina Casino has been the focal point of Catalina Island entertainment and culture since it opened on May 29, 1929. For nearly a century, the Casino has been the venue of choice for great entertainers, Broadway productions, and special events.

StructureEdit

Surrounded by sea on three sides, the circular structure of the Catalina Casino is the equivalent of 12 stories tall. It has a movie theater on the first level and a ballroom on the top level. The building interiors were decorated in the Art Deco style, including with sterling silver and gold-leaf accents.

About Catalina Casino

Dominating the Avalon landscape from its regal perch on the edge of Avalon Bay, the Casino exemplifies the style and romance of Catalina Island. It gets its name from the Italian language, where “casino” means a gathering place. There has never been gambling at Catalina Casino.

Built under the direction of William Wrigley, Jr., the iconic building was designed by Sumner A. Spaulding and Walter Webber as the first circular building of its time. Restored to its original condition, the Art Deco and Mediterranean Revival building is a stunning reminder of Catalina’s glorious past.

The height of the building is equivalent to 11 stories, with Avalon Theatre on the main floor, and a ballroom and promenade on the upper floor. The 20,000 square foot ballroom can accommodate up to 1,500 dancers and is the world’s largest circular ballroom without supporting pillars.

The ballroom retains its original romantic style -- a lavish medley of rose-hued walls, an arching, fifty-foot ceiling with five Tiffany-like chandeliers, an elevated stage, raised seating areas around the dance floor, and a vintage, full-service bar in the back.

Avalon Theatre is also an architectural masterpiece, with its soaring murals, domed ceiling, perfect acoustics, and the original pipe organ built by the Page Organ Company of Lima, Ohio. It's one of the last of its kind in the world that's still in operation.

The Casino hosts most of Catalina’s major indoor events, including the annual New Year’s Eve Celebration, Catalina Island JazzTrax Festival, and Catalina Film Festival. Tours of the Catalina Casino are available daily unless a private event is being held.
